Experience
From Curious Expedition 2 Wiki
During expeditions and all kinds of events, you can gain experience points. Sometimes a specific character will gain experience points and sometimes the whole team. You can spend experience points in order to promote characters (level them up).
Gaining experience is something you should be looking for. Promoting your explorer and your trek members means more powerful stats (for example better values on the perks and an upgraded dice). Promoting also helps to regain Loyalty on a character that has very low loyalty.

Events
Searching the shipwreck will give some experience to the character who did the search.
Combat
At the end of each combat, you gain some experience.
