Every island is made out of one to five regions. Depending on your difficulty you can get a smaller or bigger island with more or fewer regions. Each island type has multiple region types that will generate different maps. For example, the jungle islands can have plains regions, swamp regions, or thick jungle regions. Having more regions means that there can be more locations, bigger islands can thus have multiple villages and many huts.
Discovering all regions of an island is part of the Cartographer's objectives.
